Abstract
The Piroxicam is well known to be a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which has anti-inflammatory, antiedematous, and analgesic activities through the mechanism of inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase.
Clinical survey for piroxicam was carried out on 40 cases of degenerative arthritis that had visited or admitted in the Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery, Inje Medical College Busan Baik Hospital for 6 months since Aug. 1980.
Following results were obtained:
1. The piroxicam was effective from the 2nd week of its administration especially in joint tenderness and motion and pain but relatively less effective in joint swelling.
2. In relation of the duration of the disease with the effectiveness of the piroxicam, the shorter the duration of the disease the better its effectiveness.
3. Side effects were encountered in 8 caces (20%) with piroxicam during its medication, which were abdominal pain, indigestion, facial edema and palpitation. But it is not responsible only for the piroxicam in respect that those are almost developed in patients who kept on taking steroid or herb medication a long time.
